Roman Catholic Saint. Marie-Bernarde Soubirous, who was called Bernadette, was born January 7, 1844 just outside the town of Lourdes, department of Haute-Pyrenees in the south of France. Bernadette was the oldest of 9 children born to François Soubirous and Louise Castérot. Only 4 of the children survived to adulthood.
Frail in health, Bernadette was the eldest of nine children from a poverty-stricken family. She contracted cholera in the epidemic of 1854 and suffered from asthma and other ailments throughout her life. Between February 11 and July 16, 1858, at the age of 14, she had a series of visions of the Virgin Mary in the nearby Massabielle grotto.

"Bernadette" is a 1967 hit song recorded by the Four Tops for the Motown label. The song was written and composed by Holland–Dozier–Holland, Motown's main songwriting team, and produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier. The song reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was The Four Tops's final Top 10 hit of the 1960s. When one describes the Apparitions, Bernadette is often presented as a poor, frail and ignorant girl, living in miserable conditions in the Cachot. True, but it was not always thus. When she was born on 7th January, 1844, at the Boly Mill, she was the first child and heiress of Francois Soubirous and Louise Casterot who married for love.
